Nemunaitis was settled many centuries ago on the banks of the Nemunas River, drowning in pine forests. The fact that the town is inseparable from the Nemunas is also evidenced by its name: Nemunaitis - the pleasant name of the Nemunas. Legend has it that many centuries ago the Viking commander Nemon, who came from overseas, stopped here. He liked the hospitality and care of the residents. When he left, he rewarded everyone with various riches. Grateful residents named the area Nemunaičius in honor of the commander. Nemunaitis Castle is mentioned in 1384. in descriptions of the Crusader wars, from 1387 the town of Nemunaitis is mentioned. The first inhabitants settled in these areas as early as the 4th century, as evidenced by archaeological finds.
After the Battle of Žalgiris, without the threat of enemies, the town became an important logging and trade center. in 1792 Nemunaits was granted Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms depicting St. Casimir. During the historical calamities, self-government and the coat of arms were abolished. On 1999 November 10 the historical coat of arms of Nemunaitis was restored by presidential decree.
19th century The surroundings of Nemunaitis became famous for mineral springs, but the area has not been declared a resort.
20th century at the beginning of the year, Nemunaitis was made famous by Lithuanian societies that organized various plays and evenings and had a library of Lithuanian publications.
