Punia was first mentioned in written sources in 1382. However, it is believed that the famous Pilėnai fight took place namely on the Punia Mound in 1336 when defenders and castle dwellers chose tragic death in flame rather than surrender to Crusaders. The Nemunas Loops Regional Park starts in Punia.
